Switching internet providers sounds scarier than it actually is.
People worry about downtime, lost emails, surprise fees, or somehow “messing something up” that can’t be undone. But for most homes, switching is pretty straightforward, and far less dramatic than it feels.
Here’s what really happens when you switch internet providers, step by step.
First: Nothing Breaks (usually!)
One of the biggest myths about switching providers is that it’s risky. It isn’t.
Your devices don’t get wiped. Emails don’t disappear. The Netflix password survives. Switching internet providers doesn’t affect your computer, your files, or your apps, it simply changes who delivers your internet connection. If you are using a rental modem from us, your Wi-Fi network name and password will change, but you can always change them to what they were previously if you’d like.
Choose a Plan Based on How You Use the internet
Before anything else happens, you’ll choose an internet plan that fits your household.
This usually means talking through:
- How many people live in your home
- How many devices you use
- Whether you stream, game, or work from home, or just need a basic service for checking emails
We don’t want you to overpay for bandwidth you don’t need, so we’d be happy to recommend something that fits your day-to-day usage.
Switch Day: What to Expect
On the first day of your service, a technician may visit your home to do the install if we booked that ahead of time, but in most cases, if you are using our cable internet, you will be able to self-install.
If a technician comes out, they’ll typically:
- Check the incoming cable line (and find it if it’s hiding somewhere in your home)
- Test the connection
- Make sure everything is working before they leave
With a service like ours, the technician likely will not connect your modem/router for you, but that’s OK! Once you know where to connect it and that the line is working as expected, you should be able to plug it in in just a second or two. We have a video about the connection process to demonstrate just how easy it is.
In most cases, the switchover happens quickly. Your pre-activated modem should come online almost right away. If it doesn’t, we can help walk you through the next steps.
Your Old Service and New Service don’t “fight”
Another common worry is overlap between providers.
Your new provider doesn’t typically interfere with your old one. With our services, you simply unplug the old provider’s modem and plug ours in instead. Once the new service is active, your old connection is simply no longer being used. The important part is making sure you cancel your previous service after the switch so you aren’t paying for two services.
Pro tip: you can keep your old service active until the new one is fully working, just for peace of mind.
Your Wi-Fi Might Feel Different (in a good way)
After switching, many people notice improvements right away, such as faster speeds, more stable connections, or better coverage.
New equipment can make a bigger difference than expected. A new modem or router alone can dramatically improve Wi-Fi performance, especially in busy households. However, your Wi-Fi can also feel worse if there are coverage issues caused by the location of the modem, or the setup of your home. We have some tips on how to improve it, and don’t be afraid to contact customer service if you need more help.
A short adjustment period is normal
It’s normal to spend a day or two getting used to the new setup.
You may need to reconnect a few devices, enter your new Wi-Fi password, or adjust where your modem sits. That’s all expected and normal.
And if something doesn’t feel right, this is where good support really matters.
Switching internet providers is much less complicated than it sounds. With the right provider, it’s a smooth process designed to minimize downtime and maximize peace of mind.
At SimplyNet, we guide you through every step, answer questions before they turn into worries, and make sure you’re comfortably online before we call the job done.
If you’ve been thinking about switching but hesitating, this is your sign that it’s probably easier than you think.
